Poprawność polityczna i myślenie o polityce. Przypadek Hannah Arendt

Paulina Sosnowska

Abstrakt

The paper is an attempt to depict the relationship between the rules of political correctness in intellectual debate and the problem of understanding the subject of this debate. In order to analyze this relationship, the author refers to one of the greatest, and at the same time, one of the most controversial political thinkers of the 20th century – Hannah Arendt. The analysis goes through examples of the most ‘politically incorrect’ moments in Arendt’s work. Two texts are taken into consideration, both of which elicited a storm proportional to their incidence: Reflections on Little Rock – a voice in the matter of racial desegregation in schools of the American South, and the famous Eichmann in Jerusalem – a report of the trial of one of the greatest criminals of the Hitler period. The first of these controversial contributions is not widely known in the Polish humanistic debate, as it is apparently limited to the local problems of the American South many years ago. The theoretical background of the problem, however, refers to the topical issues that are central to our understanding of the relationship between society and the public sphere. The second contribution, in contrast with the first, caused an international uproar that contributed to Arendt’s turbulent but sustained worldwide fame. Both texts along with the reaction of the public opinion on them, however, allow us to observe, although to differing degrees, a specific phenomenon: how “political correctness†(although the expression itself emerged later), or, to put it differently, keeping to the rules of intellectual orthodoxy and anonymous censorship of public opinion is dangerous, not so much to freedom of speech, but rather for its paralyzing effect that it can have on our ability to comprehend what is going on around us.
